DARS 23: COMPANIONSHIP OF ‘ARIFIN

(SPIRITUAL MASTERS, KNOWERS OF ALLAH)

In the words of my master, my grandfather, may Allah spread his benefit, when he spoke in Diyani (a suburb in Mombasa, Kenya, at the house of his loving disciple, al-Marhum Muhammad ‘Abbas Jahadmi), in the month of Sha‘ban 1409 H. He explained the Saying of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and his family, and grant him peace:

Allah looks at some people face to face and some other people, He looks at their hearts.

My master explained, may Allah be pleased with him.

(Allah looks at some people) “Kifāhan”, meaning face to face. And some other people, He looks at their hearts.

The ones He looks at face to face are kindled with zeal. The hearts of all of them are ready, shining, filled with the light and ready. And the hearts of the other people are into this and into that, sometimes present, sometimes absent, not ready for the light to arise.

So when He (Allah) looks at the hearts of gnostics who are connected to Him, rays of the light spread out from the light, from the light of the Knowers of Allah to those present. They do not return empty-handed.

For this reason, al-Habib ‘Ali al-Habshi said:

O the lucky one who have the companionship of the lords of gnosis

that is, have companionship and sit with them.

And the one who is near to them is counted as one close to Allah

The One Who bestows His Grace on them, bestows His Grace on (all) those present.

For this reason, there is no one more virtuous than the Companions of Allah’s Prophetic Messenger (may Allah bless him and grant him peace), neither from the predecessors, nor from the followers except the Prophets (‘Alayhimussalam) because of the caring gaze bestowed on them by the Prophet (Sallallahu ‘alayhi wa Sallam), through the Grace bestowed upon him (by Allah), may Allah bless him and his family.

And in the same way when any person is near to the Knowers of Allah and the people of perfection, he obtains from them help that flows from them to him.

It has been reported:

There was someone who attended a gathering of a Knower of Allah and he looked at him with a look of conviction. And his heart was filled with the glance (of the Knower of Allah) at him in that gathering. And he came out from him, and he journeyed and fell into worldly problems and sins, and many things befell him. Until one day he returned and he said to himself: I forgot that gathering of that day. So when he realized that, he felt the light shining in his heart. And that attentive gaze (of the Knower of Allah) came up to him suddenly after twenty years.

And if the gaze from him proves true for one

Of the servants, with Allah’s permission it revives him

How many of them (the Knowers of Allah) have looked at us and also how many of them have witnessed us. May Allah strengthen the ties between us and them, Amin.
