MANBA‘ AL-IMDĀD: A FOUNTAIN OF HELP

A Compendium of the talks of:

AL-HABĪB AHMAD MASH-HŪR BIN TĀHĀ AL-HADDĀD

Compiled by his grandson:

DARS 27: THE TRIALS OF DAJJAL (THE IMPOSTER)

In the words of my master, my grandfather, may Allah spread his benefit, when he explained the Hadith (Saying) of the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace).

Whoever memorizes the first ten verses of Surah al-Kahf will be safeguarded against the trials of Dajjal (the imposter).

My master explained, may Allah be pleased with him.

Dajjal means an embellished arch-liar.

It has been reported in (another) Saying of the Prophet, may Allah bless him:

Before the coming of the big Dajjal, thirty other dajjals will come. They will deceive people in matters of their religion.

They will instigate people against their religion. Some came and some were accepted.

Dajjal pretends to perform miracles but it is a lie. He claims lordship and divinity, intending to wipe out the truth and the religion. Before the coming of the anti-Christ (Dajjal), will come 30 dajjals. Among these was Musaylamah al-kadhdhab (the arch-liar) who arose in Najd in the time of the Prophet, may Allah bless him. He claimed Prophet-hood and was killed. Among them was Tulayha al-Asdi, in the same way from Najd. He also claimed Prophet-hood and was killed. Among them was al-Aswad al-Anasi who claimed Prophet-hood and was killed. Among them was someone in the time of al-Mansur al-‘Abbasi who claimed Prophet-hood and came with the strange and (apparently) amazing things. In the same way, in each era, dajjal has appeared. The learned scholars, may Allah be pleased with them, have explained that whoever has the attributes of dajjal (the imposter) is one of them.

Dajjal is the one who comes to people who are holding on to Shari‘ah (sacred Muslim law), and to one madh-hab (school of sacred Muslim law), and to one spiritual path. He comes to them with another type of talk to (try to) destroy whatever they have. He comes with strange tafsir (interpretation of the Holy Qur’an) that is different from the established tafsir. So when you see someone dividing the Muslims and dividing those who are united and coming with what you and your forefathers never had, he is dajjal. Representatives of such as these are 30 dajjals.

This is according to the text of the Hadith (Saying) of the Prophet, may Allah bless him. Whoever recites and memorizes the first ten verses of Surah al-Kahf will be safeguarded from the trials of the anti-Christ, from following the ant-Christ, and from many tribulations. O brethren! How many trials and tribulations take place while people are heedless, especially the common people, with little knowledge and with few who remember. Comes along one (of them), positions his idea, and answers with words we do not understand. First came the Qadiyani, most astray of people, and put the community of Muslims to trouble. And came the Aga Khan, and said there is no Salah (Prayer), and no ruku‘ (bowing to Allah in Prayer), and no sujud (prostrations to Allah in Prayer). And they yet claimed to be Muslims. Such are the types of dajjals. I do not like to enter into other matters in sacred Muslim law which they changed.

So we must thank our pious predecessors. We must thank them for passing on to us the Hadith, and the Islamic laws and the four madh-habs. All the four madh-habs form the sacred Muslim law. The Shafi‘i madh-hab is sacred Muslim law. The Hanafi madh-hab is sacred Muslim law. The Maliki madh-hab is sacred Muslim law. The Hanbali madh-hab is sacred Muslim law. All are from the Book (the Qur’an) and the Sunnah (Prophetic tradition).

Then someone comes who does not know and does not understand a thing except for a couple of words which he says, and asks: what is madh-hab? Our madh-hab is the Book of Allah (the Qur’an) and the Sunnah (tradition) of His Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace). He (the ignorant person) does not have an understanding of the Book of Allah and the tradition of the (Prophetic) Messenger or of the parts of the Book or the parts of the Sunnah. So those are the ones who change the religion of the people and they divide them and empty them so they leave their madh-habs. These are the types of dajjal whom the Prophet, may Allah bless him and his family, mentioned.

So he is the one who criticizes the Imams of madh-hab and the (Prophet’s) Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) and those who came before him. From this sect and this type, we get problems at this time.

O brethren! Allah said about the pious folk:

And those who came after them say: Our Lord! Forgive us and our brothers who preceded us in the Faith. (59:10)

They are better than us and they are the predecessors and they came to us with the Faith.

And do not put into our hearts any spite towards those who believe. Our Lord! Indeed, You are Most Kind, Merciful. (59:10)

Rancour has entered into their hearts even against the Imams (of madh-hab). They say: “Al-Bukhari said. Muslim said”. (They quote al-Bukhari and Muslim). But Imam al-Bukhari was Shafi‘i and Imam Muslim was Hanafi. These Imams of Hadith held on to the madh-habs. The madh-hab is sacred Muslim law.

After that, my master made a long du‘a (supplication) and recited al-Fatiha at the end.
