MANBA‘ AL-IMDĀD: A FOUNTAIN OF HELP

A Compendium of the talks of:

DARS 37: BE CALM WHETHER IN EASE OR IN DIFFICULTY

My master, may Allah be pleased with him said,

Allah, the Glorified and the Exalted, has put man in two alternative situations; between ease and adversity, and he faces everything. So some of them are afflicted with something harmful such as a disease, or loss or difficulty; while there is a blessing on another one, so for him things are easy about whatever he wishes. And all that is in the Power and Gaze of Allah, the Glorified and the Exalted. And the situation which he is in does not happen except with Wisdom. As (Allah said) in a Hadith (Qudsi):

Indeed, among My servants are those who are not set right except by poverty because if I were to enrich them, they would become reckless.

That is, in many matters they would become reckless but Allah made them poor in this world to keep them away from bad deeds and sins.

(The Hadith Qudsi continues:)

And among My servants are those who are not set right except by riches, because if I were to impoverish him, he would turn to disbelief.

He might steal or kill. So there is Wisdom in the Withholding and the Giving. So the intelligent and the knower is the one who is satisfied with the situation that Allah has put him in; whether it is good or bad, in health or in sickness, in affluence or poverty, in joy or sorrow. He does not turn away and say, “Why did this happen?”

This in reality is for him to seek refinement so that the person lives in bliss. If he happens to be in easy circumstances, he is thankful; and if he is afflicted with adversity, he is patient. So in these two situations, he is calm. In a difficult situation, he is relaxed because he knows it is from Allah and that it is a test for him. And in it there is virtue and reward (from Allah) and it is possible that if he is bestowed wealth, he might become arrogant.
