The Celebration of the Mi‘raj an-Nabi (Sallallahu ‘alayhi wa Sallam)

Isra’ and Mi‘raj is celebrated by Muslims all over the world on the night of the 27th of Rajab. On this night, special majalis (religious gatherings) are held at which Muslims recite the Qur’an, salawaat (blessings on the Prophet), especially As-Salat al-Mudariyya of Imam al-Busiri, madih (eulogies) on him, listen to talks about Isra’ and Mi‘raj, and pray more nawafil Salah (additional voluntary Prayers). Those who are familiar with the book of salawaat called Tanbih al-Anaam (Exhorting Mankind) of Shaykh ‘Abdul Jalil bin ‘Azum, recite the salawaat from it, especially those about Isra’ and Mi’raj. To crown it all, there is the recital of Salams (Salutations) to Our Beloved Holy Prophet Muhammad (Sallallahu ‘alayhi wa Sallam).

Consider for example Masjid Breik in the Old Town of Mombasa, Kenya. At this masjid, the majlis (gathering) to celebrate Isra’ and Mi‘raj is held between Maghrib and ‘Isha. The masjid is packed to capacity. Imam al-Barzanji’s Qissa al-Mi‘raj is recited, all the 14 chapters of it. Each shaykh (spiritual master) and ustadh (professor) recites one chapter. The well-known mu‘allimin (teachers) also get a chance to recite a chapter each. After each verse, the congregation responds: Allahumma salli wa sallim ‘alayh (O Allah! Bless him and bestow peace on him). Dinner is served at the conclusion of the majlis. It is a spiritual gathering whose impact remains etched in your memory.

After spending most of the night of Mi‘raj in the worship of Allah, Muslims fast the next day. In this way, Islam lives on as a universal religion for the whole of humanity till the Day of Judgement.

Sallu ‘alal Habibil A‘zam
Allahumma Salli wa Sallim ‘alayh

Invoke (Allah’s) blessings on the most beloved, the greatest (Prophet)!
May Allah’s blessings and peace be upon him.
